Camel Rock, Tesuque, New Mexico

October 2, 2013

An amazing camel shaped rock sits off the road at Pojoque, between Santa Fe and Espanola in New Mexico. It gazes away, as if disgusted, from the huge sprawling casino across the road that bears its name; looking outward across the desert, perhaps remembering former times. Huge and stately, the rock has something of the feeling of the Great Sphinx of Giza. There is a pueblo here in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, but I couldn’t find out what this amazing formation meant to the local people. It is certainly powerful as it sits there in the dry desert dust looking out into the vast distances…
